Google unveils new Pixel 8 phones and smartwatch with AI features

Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro: AI-powered photography and more

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are the first smartphones to feature Google’s custom mobile processor, Tensor G3. The chip has more AI and machine learning capabilities, enabling users to crunch more data on the device itself and in the cloud. Some of the AI features include:

  • Magic Eraser: This feature allows users to remove unwanted objects or people from their photos with a simple tap. The AI model analyzes the image and fills in the erased area with realistic details.
  • Face Unblur: This feature helps users capture sharp and clear portraits of moving subjects, such as children or pets. The AI model detects faces in motion and applies a deblurring algorithm to enhance the image quality.
  • Real Tone: This feature adjusts the white balance and color temperature of the photos to match the skin tone of the subjects. The AI model learns from diverse data sets to produce natural and accurate colors.
  • Web Summarizer: This feature helps users get the gist of a web page without reading the whole text. The AI model extracts the main points and presents them in a concise summary.
  • Call Screen: This feature helps users avoid spam calls by screening unknown numbers. The AI model answers the call and asks for the caller’s name and purpose. The user can see a transcript of the conversation and decide whether to pick up or block the call.

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro also have other features that make them stand out from the competition, such as:

  • Thermometer app: The Pixel 8 Pro has a built-in thermometer app that can measure body temperature by placing the phone on the forehead. The app is subject to approval by the Food and Drug Administration.
  • Wireless charging stand: The Pixel 8 phones come with a wireless charging stand that doubles as a smart display. The stand can show personalized information, such as weather, calendar, reminders, photos, and more.
  • Pixel Buds A-Series: The Pixel 8 phones are compatible with Google’s wireless earbuds, which offer high-quality sound, adaptive sound, fast pairing, hands-free access to Google Assistant, and more.

The Pixel 8 starts at $699 and the Pixel 8 Pro starts at $999. They will be available from Oct. 12.

Google Watch 2: A smartwatch with generative AI

Google also launched its second-generation smartwatch, the Google Watch 2. The smartwatch runs on Wear OS, Google’s operating system for wearable devices. The Google Watch 2 has several features that make use of generative AI, which can create new content or experiences based on user input. Some of the generative AI features include:

  • Trip Planner: This feature helps users plan a trip by asking them a few questions, such as their destination, budget, preferences, etc. The generative AI model then suggests an itinerary, including flights, hotels, activities, restaurants, and more.
  • Email Composer: This feature helps users write emails by generating suggestions for subject lines, greetings, body text, sign-offs, etc. The generative AI model learns from the user’s writing style and tone to create personalized and relevant emails.
  • Music Maker: This feature helps users create music by generating melodies, chords, rhythms, instruments, etc. The generative AI model can also remix existing songs or match the mood of the user.

The Google Watch 2 also has other features that make it a useful companion for everyday life, such as:

  • Health Tracker: The Google Watch 2 can monitor various health metrics, such as heart rate, blood oxygen level, sleep quality, stress level, etc. The watch can also provide insights and tips to improve health and wellness.
  • Google Pay: The Google Watch 2 supports Google Pay, which allows users to make contactless payments with their watch. Users can also store their loyalty cards, boarding passes, tickets, etc. on their watch.
  • Google Assistant: The Google Watch 2 has a built-in microphone and speaker that enable hands-free access to Google Assistant. Users can ask questions, get directions, set reminders, control smart home devices, and more with their voice.

The Google Watch 2 starts at $349.
